Why We Started
Home improvements are one of the biggest financial commitments most people make outside of buying a house itself — and one of the most exposed. A deposit paid in good faith, months of work, a contractor's word that everything will be put right. When that trust holds, it's one of the best decisions a homeowner makes. When it doesn't, there's often no safety net at all.
Harvey founded Home Improvements Guarantee in 2012 to close that gap — not by promising homeowners a guarantee that things will go perfectly, but by making sure that when a contractor commits to protecting a project, that protection is real, independently backed, and in place before work begins rather than promised after something's already gone wrong.
How the Scheme Works
Home Improvements Guarantee is a membership network of vetted contractors who use insurance-backed guarantees as standard on their clients' projects. Where arranged, this can cover:
-
Deposit protection — cover for 90 days from the date on the Deposit Protection Policy document
-
Work-in-progress protection — up to 25% of the contract value if a project is left unfinished
-
Materials protection — subject to the manufacturer's own guarantee
-
Workmanship protection — guaranteed for up to 5–10 years after completion, mirroring the contractor's own written guarantee
Contractors who join HIG go through an evidence-checking process before being approved — but membership reflects that a contractor uses insurance-backed guarantees, not a certification of workmanship quality. Homeowners should still carry out their own checks before appointing anyone. If
